The Kushana dynasty was the first to issue gold coins in India. The Kushanas, also known as the Yuehchis, were originally from western China. The first important ruler of the Kushana dynasty was Kujula Kadphises, also known as Kadphises I, who established the dynasty. His son, Vima Kadphises, was the first to issue gold coins on a large scale. Vima minted coins in three denominations: double dinar, dinar, and quarter dinar. The Kushanas also issued the largest hoards of gold coins in India.
