The last Nawab of Awadh was Wajid Ali Shah. He ruled from 1847 until 1856 when the British East India Company annexed Awadh, leading to his deposition. Wajid Ali Shah was later exiled to Calcutta (now Kolkata) and then to the city of Metiabruz in the same region.
