In the Rig Vedic period, the primary deities worshipped were Indra, the king of the gods and god of thunder and rain; Agni, the fire god and messenger between humans and gods; and Varuna, the god of cosmic order and the waters. These deities played central roles in the rituals and hymns of the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedic texts.
