The original structure of Fort William was built in 1696 CE by the British East India Company on the banks of the river Hoogly. The East India Company (EIC) which arrived in India as a trading concern was at this time outgrowing its commercial role to develop a firmer ground on the Indian soil.
Pulkeshin I, one of the notable rulers of the Chalukyan dynasty, is credited with laying the foundations of the fort of Vatapi (modern-day Badami) in the Bijapur District
