The Centigrade scale, now known as the Celsius scale, was invented by Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer and physicist. He proposed the scale in 1742, setting 0 as the boiling point of water and 100 as the freezing point. The scale was later inverted to its current form by Carl Linnaeus in 1744, with 0 as the freezing point and 100 as the boiling point of water.
