The title of viceroy was presented post the war of 1857.
The British government noticed the mismanagement by the East India Company. The Government then decided to introduce a self-governing head titled the Viceroy of India. The first viceroy was Lord Canning, and the last viceroy of India was Lord Mountbatten in 1947.
