Inventions
Babbage was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer who originated the idea of a digital programmable computer. His Difference Engine No. 1 was the first successful automatic calculator. He also invented the Analytical Engine, which contained an ALU (Arithmetical logic unit), basic flow control, and integrated memory.
Recognition
The International Charles Babbage Society (later the Charles Babbage Institute) was named after him to honor his contributions to computing.
