Alexander Graham Bell is credited with inventing the telephone in 1876. Bell’s success was based on his demonstrations and patent for a device that could “transmit vocal or other sounds telegraphically”.
Bell’s patent was granted on March 7, 1876, after a dispute with Elisha Gray. Gray’s caveat was entered on a cash blotter, but not taken to the Examiner until the following day. Bell’s filing fee was recorded earlier, leading to the myth that he arrived at the Patent Office before Gray. Gray later abandoned his caveat and didn’t contest Bell’s priority.
