The Richter scale was invented by Charles F. Richter, an American seismologist, in 1935. He developed this logarithmic scale in collaboration with Beno Gutenberg at the California Institute of Technology to measure the magnitude of earthquakes, providing a quantitative way to compare the size of different seismic events.
