The mercury thermometer was invented by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a Polish-German physicist, in 1714. Fahrenheit’s design used mercury in a glass tube, which expanded and contracted with temperature changes, providing more precise and consistent readings compared to earlier thermometers that used alcohol or water. He also developed the Fahrenheit temperature scale, which is still used in a few countries today.
