The term “Hindu rate of growth” was coined by Indian economist Raj Krishna. It referred to the low growth rate period in the Indian economy during the decades following independence, particularly in the 1950s and 1960s. This term was used to describe the relatively slow pace of economic growth during that period, characterized by around 3-4% annual growth in GDP, which was considered inadequate compared to other developing countries.
