Hannibal, the Carthaginian general, invaded Italy by crossing the Alps with North African war elephants.
The surviving elephants were successfully used in the battle of Trebia, where they panicked the Roman cavalry and Gallic allies. In his first few years in Italy, he won a succession of victories at the Battle of Ticinus, Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae, inflicting heavy losses on the Romans.
The military leader who famously crossed the Alps with elephants on the way to war with the Romans was Hannibal Barca.
