In1816, the British organized the campaign known as the Pindari War which exterminated them under the supreme command of Lord Hastings.
Pindaris were irregular horsemen, plunderers or forgets that robbed and hunted with the Maratha armies in central India during the 18th century. They followed the Maratha bands who raided Mughal territory.
The name is Marathi and probably derives from two words, meaning “bundle of grass” and “who takes.”
The British East India Company, under the leadership of Lord Hastings, exterminated the Pindaris in 1817–18 during the Pindari War.
