The polio vaccine was developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, an American virologist and medical researcher.

In 1952, Dr. Jonas Salk began working on a killed-virus vaccine against poliomyelitis (polio). After extensive testing, Salk and his team successfully developed the first effective polio vaccine, which was announced to the world on April 12, 1955. The vaccine was administered via injection (inactivated poliovirus vaccine, IPV) and was shown to be safe and effective in preventing polio.

This development was a major breakthrough in medical science and public health, as polio was a highly feared disease that caused paralysis and death, particularly affecting children. Salk’s vaccine was a crucial step towards the global eradication efforts that followed, which ultimately led to the near-eradication of polio worldwide.
