Indian nuclear physicist Homi J. Bhabha, a physics professor and founding director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, developed the technology for underground nuclear explosions.
Underground nuclear testing involves detonating nuclear weapons at a sufficient depth underground to contain the explosion and prevent radioactive material from entering the atmosphere. The first underground nuclear explosion took place on September 19, 1957, when the United States detonated a 1.7-kiloton nuclear weapon in an underground tunnel at the Nevada Test Site.
The technology for underground nuclear explosion developed by Indian nuclear physicist, Homi J. Bhabha, who was the professor of physics and the founding director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
