The Mahābhārata is the longest epic poem known and has been described as “the longest poem ever written”. Its longest version consists of over 100,000 śloka or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages.

The epic is written in Sanskrit and is attributed to the sage Vyasa. It is set in the Indian subcontinent and tells the story of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kaurava and Pandava princes. The epic’s central themes are dharma (righteousness), duty, and the cosmic struggle between good and evil. The Mahābhārata is believed to have been composed as early as the 4th century and is divided into 18 books, or Parvas. In Indonesia, it is known as Bharatayuddha
