This recommendation was made by the University Education Commission of 1948–1949 which was set up under the chairmanship of S. Radhakrishnan “to report on Indian university education and suggest improvements and extensions”.
The University Education Commission (UEC) of 1948–1949 recommended the formation of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The appointed by the government in November 1948 under the leadership of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. The commission’s purpose was to evaluate the state of university education in India and suggest ways to improve it. The UEC released its report in August 1949, also known as the Radhakrishnan Commission report, which included several recommendations for higher education. One of these recommendations was to convert the University Grants Committee into a commission.
