The chemical commonly used for inducing artificial rain is silver iodide (AgI). Silver iodide is used in cloud seeding operations where it is dispersed into clouds to encourage the formation of ice crystals, which can then grow and fall as precipitation (rain or snow). This technique is employed to enhance rainfall in areas experiencing drought or to mitigate the impact of hailstorms.
