On the day India gained independence, August 15, 1947, Mahatma Gandhi was in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He was deeply distressed by the communal violence and the partition-related upheavals occurring in the country. Instead of celebrating the independence, Gandhi spent the day in prayer and fasting, focusing on promoting peace and communal harmony.
