The Chipko movement originated in the state of Uttarakhand (formerly part of Uttar Pradesh) in India. It first gained prominence in the early 1970s in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, and later spread to other parts of the region. The movement was primarily focused on environmental conservation and led to significant activism for the protection of forests.
