Sushi originated in Japan. Its early form, known as “nare-zushi,” dates back to ancient Japan and involved fermenting fish with rice. Over time, sushi evolved into the more modern styles we recognize today, such as “nigiri” and “maki,” which emerged during the Edo period (1603-1868). The modern sushi we commonly enjoy, with fresh fish and rice, was developed in Tokyo (formerly Edo) in the 19th century.
The History of Sushi. Sushi is said to have originated in China between the 5th and the 3rd centuries BC, as a means of preserving fish in salt. Narezushi, the original form of sushi, has been made in South East Asia for centuries, and nowadays, there are still traces of it in some parts.
