John J. Loud, an American lawyer and inventor, patented the first ballpoint pen in 1888. Loud’s pen had a revolving steel ball that could write on rough surfaces like leather and wood, but it couldn’t write on paper, so the patent expired and the pen didn’t gain commercial value.
