You should use a silt fence in areas where sheet flow runoff is expected rather than in concentrated flow channels like ditches or streams. A silt fence is ideal for perimeter control at the base of a slope or around a soil stockpile. It acts as a final line of defense to keep displaced soil within the boundaries of the construction project.
