Hair loss, or ‘alopecia’, affects millions of individuals globally. Hair fall occurs due to disruption of the normal hair growth cycle: anagen(growth), catagen(transitional), and telogen(resting) phases. Among normal individuals 50-100 hair strands might fall. However, shredding hair more than this indicates an imbalance.
There are various causes of hair loss, among which the most common include androgenetic alopecia. This is also called pattern hair loss. The underlying cause includes genetic predisposition, such as the effect of dihydrotestosterone, a derivative of testosterone. This leads to gradual miniaturization of hair follicles, resulting in hair thinning, short hair strand and scarring as a long-term effect.
Hair loss can happen for many reasons, and identifying the cause is important for choosing the right treatment. The most common reason is genetics, often called Androgenetic Alopecia or pattern baldness. Other causes include stress, hormonal changes, poor diet, iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, certain medications, illness, and scalp infections. Temporary hair shedding can also occur after illness, surgery, or emotional stress, a condition known as Telogen Effluvium. Frequent use of heat styling tools, harsh chemicals, and tight hairstyles may also damage hair over time. According to experts at QHT Clinic, early diagnosis and proper treatment can significantly improve hair health and slow further hair loss.
