The 1889 Panhard et Levassor is significant because it was one of the first automobiles to use a standardized, commercially available internal combustion engine. Unlike earlier vehicles, which used various experimental engines, the Panhard et Levassor’s engine was a successful model of the type that would become standard in later cars. It also introduced the concept of front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
