Samuel Morse is best known for inventing the Morse code and for his significant contributions to the development of the telegraph. In the 1830s and 1840s, Morse developed the first practical electromagnetic telegraph system, and in 1844, he successfully demonstrated its use by sending a message from Washington, D.C., to Baltimore, Maryland. Morse code, a system of dots and dashes representing letters and numbers, became a standard method of communication for telegraphy.
