Sweden has a single-chamber parliament called “the Riksdag”.
Legislative power lies with the parliament, as set out in the Instrument of Government, one of Sweden’s four fundamental laws. Sweden joined the European Union on 1 January 1995.
Since 1971, the Riksdag has been a unicameral legislature with 349 members, elected proportionally and serving, since 1994, fixed four-year terms.
