Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and has a diameter of about 4,880 kilometers (3,032 miles), making it the smallest planet in our solar system. Its proximity to the Sun gives it extreme temperature variations, with daytime temperatures reaching up to 430°C (800°F) and nighttime temperatures plummeting to -180°C (-290°F). Despite its small size, Mercury has a significant gravitational pull, due to its dense, iron-rich core. It also lacks an atmosphere to retain heat, contributing to its drastic temperature changes.
