The subcostal nerve provides sensory innervation to the skin of the abdomen below the rib cage and contributes to motor innervation of some abdominal muscles.
The subcostal nerve is the twelfth thoracic nerve (T12) of the spinal cord. Its main role is to innervate the muscles and skin of the lower abdomen. Specifically, the subcostal nerve supplies sensation to the skin of the lower abdomen and also provides motor function to some of the muscles in this region, including the transversus abdominis and the internal oblique muscles. It contributes to the overall function and movement of the abdominal wall.
