The powerhouse of the cell is the mitochondrion, a vital organelle responsible for producing energy through the process of cellular respiration. Mitochondria generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of the cell, by converting nutrients into energy through a series of biochemical reactions. These organelles have their own DNA and double membrane, which facilitates their energy production functions. The inner membrane folds, known as cristae, increase the surface area for energy-producing reactions. Mitochondria are essential for maintaining cellular metabolism and supporting various cellular functions, making them critical to the survival and efficiency of almost all eukaryotic cells.
