The narrow strait that separates the island of Sri Lanka from India is called the Palk Strait. It lies between the Tamil Nadu state of India and the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. The Palk Strait connects the Bay of Bengal in the northeast with the Gulf of Mannar in the southwest. It is approximately 53 to 80 kilometers (33 to 50 miles) wide at its narrowest point.
