Detail: The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, serving as a protective barrier against environmental factors, pathogens, and dehydration. It is composed of multiple layers of epithelial cells that undergo constant renewal and shedding through a process called desquamation. The epidermis also contains melanocytes, which produce melanin pigment to protect the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation and give it its color.
