According to this legend, Phidippides was a Greek messenger. His mission was to go from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory of his army against the Persians at the Battle of Marathon (490 BC). When the Persian army landed at Marathon in 490 BC, the Athenians chose Phidippides, their best runner, to send word to other Greeks of the invasion.
