The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a network of membranous tubules and sacs involved in the synthesis and transport of proteins and lipids. There are two types:
* Rough ER: Studded with ribosomes and involved in the synthesis and modification of proteins.
* Smooth ER: Lacks ribosomes and is involved in the synthesis of lipids, metabolism of carbohydrates, and detoxification of drugs and poisons.
