Primary growth in plants involves the elongation of stems and roots through cell division in the apical meristems located at the tips of growing shoots and roots. Secondary growth, which occurs in woody plants, involves the thickening of stems and roots through the activity of lateral meristems (vascular cambium and cork cambium).
