Critical limb ischemia (CLI) and acute limb ischemia (ALI) differ in their onset, cause, severity and urgency. CLI is a chronic condition that develops gradually over weeks or months due to the progressive narrowing or blockage of peripheral arteries. The occurrence of CLI is more life-threatening. It is characterized by persistent rest pain, non-healing ulcers, or gangrene. CLI reflects long-standing inadequate blood flow with some collateral circulation present. It is among the most severe forms of peripheral artery disease.
In contrast, ALI occurs suddenly due to a severe reduction in limb blood flow. This condition typically occurs within hours to days as a result of an arterial embolism, thrombosis, or trauma.
