A red giant is a late stage in the life cycle of a star where it has expanded and cooled after exhausting its hydrogen fuel, while a white dwarf is the remnant of a star that has shed its outer layers and is no longer undergoing nuclear fusion, typically very dense and hot but slowly cooling over time.
