Lunar eclipse: Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. Happens at night, visible from anywhere on the night side of Earth, and is safe to view directly.
Solar eclipse: The Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, blocking sunlight and casting a shadow on Earth. Happens during the day, visible only from a small area on Earth, and requires eye protection to view safely. Key difference: In a lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon; in a solar eclipse, the Moon’s shadow falls on Earth.
