A direct free kick is a set-piece situation where a player can score directly from the kick, with no additional touch required from another player to validate the goal. In contrast, an indirect free kick requires another player to touch the ball after the kick before a goal can be scored. Indirect free kicks are typically awarded for technical fouls or less serious infractions.
