Saprotrophic nutrition is a type of heterotrophic nutrition where organisms feed on dead and decaying organic matter. These organisms, called saprotrophs or saprophytes, secrete enzymes onto organic matter to break it down externally, then absorb the resulting nutrients. Examples include fungi and certain bacteria.
