India is a key supplier of vaccines globally and participates in initiatives like GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance.
In October 2013 the country got its first indigenously developed vaccine for Japanese encephalitis “JENVAC”. The vaccine was jointly developed by scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and Bharat Biotech International Ltd.
