Gully erosion is a widespread and often dramatic form of soil erosion caused by flowing surface water. It consists of open, unstable channels that have been cut more than 30 centimetres deep into the ground. Gully erosion is a result of the interaction of land use, climate and slope.
Gully erosion is a type of soil erosion that occurs when water channels across unprotected land and wears away the soil along drainage lines ¹ ². Gully erosion can be caused by several factors, including ¹ ²:
– Excessive clearing and land use
– Overgrazing
– Inadequate soil stabilization
Some common effects of gully erosion include ¹ ²:
– Dissection of property
– Loss of productive land
– Reduced property values
– Discoloration of water supply
– Sedimentation of waterways
Gully erosion is a severe form of soil erosion that occurs when water running along small channels or streams becomes concentrated and removes significant amounts of soil from the landscape. This process creates deep, narrow channels known as gullies, which can expand over time and cause substantial environmental damage.
