Gene therapy is a medical technique that involves altering the genes inside a person’s cells to treat or prevent disease. This can be achieved by:

Replacing a Mutated Gene: Introducing a healthy copy of a gene that is missing or nonfunctional.
Inactivating a Mutated Gene: Disabling a gene that is functioning improperly and causing disease.
Introducing a New or Modified Gene: Adding new genes to help fight disease or improve cellular function.
    Potential Benefits of Gene Therapy
Treatment of Genetic Disorders: Gene therapy can potentially cure or alleviate symptoms of inherited diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and certain types of muscular dystrophy.

Cancer Treatment: It can be used to target cancer cells by introducing genes that enhance the immune response against tumors or make cancer cells more susceptible to treatments.

Infectious Diseases: Gene therapy may help combat viral infections, such as HIV, by modifying the genes of immune cells to resist infection.

Regenerative Medicine: It holds promise for regenerating damaged tissues and organs by delivering genes that promote cell growth and healing.

Personalized Medicine: Gene therapy can be tailored to the individual’s specific genetic makeup, potentially leading to more effective treatments with fewer side effects.

Long-term Effects: Unlike traditional treatments that may require ongoing administration, gene therapy has the potential for long-lasting effects, as it aims to correct the underlying genetic issue.

Reduction of Disease Burden: By targeting the root causes of genetic diseases, gene therapy could reduce the overall burden of these conditions on individuals and healthcare systems.
