FOMO, or “Fear of Missing Out,” is the anxiety that others are having rewarding experiences from which one is absent. Social media amplifies FOMO by constantly showcasing curated highlights of others’ lives, making users feel like they are missing out on events, opportunities, or relationships. This can lead to a sense of inadequacy or loneliness as people compare their lives to the seemingly perfect lives of others online. FOMO is a powerful driver of social media engagement but can also contribute to stress and dissatisfaction in real life.
