Barrackpore in Kolkata famous for British Colonial History, Barrackpore Trunk Road, Mangal Pandey, Barrackpore Cantonment, Gandhi Ghat, Dakshineswar Kali Temple, Industrial area, and Education.
Barrackpore has a special place in India’s history during the British colonial era. It was here that Mangal Pandey revolted against the English starting the First War of Independence in 1857. This event led to a wider rebellion against the British rule.
It was also India’s first British cantonment, (site of the first British military barracks, established in 1772). It was the beginning of British military presence and control in the region.
Barrackpore lies just east of the Hooghly River, 15 miles (24 km) north of Kolkata. The name Barrackpore is probably derived from there having been troops stationed there—in barracks—since 1772.
