Uneven skin tone is often characterized by dysregulated melanocyte activity. Melanocytes are responsible for melanin production (the pigment responsible for skin colouration). Uneven melanin presence in a specific area makes the complexion look uneven. Instead of having an even colour throughout, some areas of the skin may appear darker, lighter, redder, or patchy than others. You might notice dark spots after acne, sun-induced pigmentation, redness around the cheeks, or dull patches that make the skin look less radiant.
There can be distinct reasons for uneven skin tone. This includes excessive melanin production due to prolonged sun/UV light exposure, excessive heat exposure, use of harsh chemical products on the skin, hormonal fluctuations, acne breakouts, cuts, allergic reactions.
