Pawn promotion occurs when a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board. It is then promoted to any piece of the player’s choice, except another king. Most players choose a queen for its power, but sometimes a knight, rook, or bishop is chosen for strategic reasons. Promotion can significantly alter the game’s dynamics.
