A Gram Panchayat is the cornerstone of rural local self-government in India. It is a local government body at the village or small town level in India. The term “Gram” refers to a village, and “Panchayat” means an assembly of five members. Gram Panchayats typically consist of elected representatives from the village or town, known as Panchayat members, headed by a Sarpanch or village head.
Gram Panchayats are responsible for local governance and administration in rural areas, including areas like infrastructure development, sanitation, healthcare, education, and social welfare schemes. They play a crucial role in grassroots democracy and decision-making, as they address the specific needs and concerns of the local population.
