Spent nuclear fuel, which is highly radioactive, is initially stored in spent fuel pools at the reactor site to cool and shield against radiation. After several years, it may be transferred to dry cask storage, which provides additional containment and radiation shielding. Long-term solutions, such as deep geological repositories, are still being developed to ensure safe disposal for thousands of years.
