Brexit” is a portmanteau of the words “Britain” and “exit.” It refers to the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (EU), following a referendum held on June 23, 2016, in which a majority of British voters chose to leave the EU. The formal process of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU began when Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union was triggered on March 29, 2017, and was completed on January 31, 2020.
